The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 58

Motioning the party to stand back, Clint picked the lock on the secret door and opened it revealing the room beyond.

This place is a kitchen. A stone counter lines the southern wall, and a leering gargoyle head looks downward, moth open, into a clack sink at the counter’s end to the east. Worn smooth in places, a long stone table occupies the center of the room. Above it hangs a web of wrought iron, upon which dangle iron pots and utensils. Two huge fireplaces, each furnished with iron wire shelves and iron rods to set or suspend pots on, are set into the walls – one to the east and the other in an alcove to the north. Soot and ash are still piled in their bottoms. A pantry looms in the northwest corner, its shelves still holding a few shiny utensils and dishes, possibly of gold or brass. Unlike the musty areas you have explored so far, this room smells vaguely of death.

Banjo maintained his concentration on his Detect Magic spell but the presence of magic was not detected.

Clint examined all three doors at the end of the hallway. He did not hear anything nor detect any traps. The secret door was locked but it was opened after a second try at picking the lock.

The door opened into a hallway that lead to a small room with an iron spiral staircase leading up. Opposite the stairs was another secret door. The rogue quickly scouted the area beyond and returned and reported his findings to the group.

Clint lead the exodus from the dust room through the left door into the hallway beyond. The hallway was 35 feet long with 4 doors on the left and one the far right. The sharp-eyed elf also noticed a secret door at the end of the passage.

Taking a moment in the safety of the hallway, Banjo was able to identify the armor and sword found in the previous room as +1 leather armor and a +2 greatsword.

Clint searched the doors to the left and right for locks and traps. He did not discover either on each of the doors.

Kirlic concluded that the dust was likely the remains of previous victims and is creeped out when Dargoth begins to dig through the piles. The fighter sifted through the dust and discovered a suit of leather armor and a greatsword.

Banjo and Thurstan maintained concentration on their Detect Magic spells. The aura filling the room was strong necromancy. The items found by Dargoth both detected as magical.

The party gathered and split the gear of the fallen drow and entered the chamber beyond.

A green haze obscures this chamber, giving it a strangely aquatic look. The floor is tiles with slabs the color of bone, and the walls are crowded with what appears to be hundreds of vault doors, each bearing the crude likeness of a humanoid. Drifts of gray dust are mounded here and there, but they pile thickly in each corner. A chill radiates from the chamber, oddly penetrating and portending death.

Banjo cast Magic Missile at Drow 2. The spell hit and penetrated the dark elf’s spell resistance. Kirlic moved forward past the unconscious Clint and let loose with a focused shot from his short bow. The arrow flew true and struck the drow in the throat dealing 29 damage.

The drow slashed at Thurstan with his scimitar. The attack found its mark dealing 10 damage to the cleric. The drow gave ground and stepped back toward the corner.

Thurstan stepped forward into the space vacated by the enemy. He stabbed with his rapier but missed the well armored foe. Mr. Wolfe maneuvered around his master and attacked the drow from the top. The snapping jaws of the wolf missed the dark elf. Dargoth moved closer to the fight awaiting an opportunity to engage the foe.

Banjo stepped back an unleashed a Scorching Ray at the nearest drow. The ray stuck true and bypassed the drow’s spell resistance dealing 19 damage. Clint moved forward and tumbled past the first drow but did not have enough momentum to make it to the next. Not wanting to lose the opportunity of surprise, the rogue slashed at the first drow with Merthύvial. The magic blade dealt 20 damage. Kirlic moved toward the opening and fired a focused shot at the far drow. The shot sailed past Clint and struck the enemy behind the pillar dealing 11 damage.

The drow next to Clint power attacked with his scimitar but missed the elusive rogue. The archer behind the pillar scored a hit the elf dealing 7 damage. The arrow was poisoned and Clint slumped into unconsciousness. After firing, the drow retreated back to the next pillar.

Dargoth stepped forward and power attacked the drow with his bastard sword. The blow landed in spectacular fashion, dealing 33 damage. The dark elf died. Thurstan moved forward to engage the archer but could not attack. Mr. Wolfe folled his master and attacked with his bite but the attack missed.

Clint tried to talk his way past the drow intimating that the party had been invited and that there should be not worry on their part. Clint would not hold them responsible for the party’s death if it indeed came. After several runs at this it became clear that the drow feared their employer more than the party. The guard steadfastly refused to allow the party to enter the Spike. Unable and unwilling to try the level of bribe he suspected was required; the rogue sadly shook his head and signaled the party to action.

GM Note - To speed the adventure

As your characters explore the Necromancer's Spike, not every location will result in a combat or a social encounter. This does not mean that there are not clues, items of interest or treasure to be found.

To keep the adventure moving through this structure, do you wish to provide a set of standing orders to be applied to areas where combat and/or a social encounter is not immediately indicated? I expect that this will reduce such areas to a single turn rather than two or more as I fish actions from each player.

To implement this, I need a list of actions the party will perform every time they encounter a new area. i.e. Cast Detect Magic, Search for traps, Search for clues, etc.. If you provide nothing else, you must always provide a set of extra roll with your turn post.

The party stepped forward to converse with the drow. Banjo stepped forward and attempted strong arm negotiations.

The drow looks confused by the cryptic threats and shakes his head. “Be on your way. No one is permitted to enter. It would not do you any good if we let you pass either. We have not gone farther than this entry tunnel – everyone we send into the room yonder molders into grave dust!” He takes a step backward as he motions to the room beyond.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 49

As the party approaches the opening, a bulky male drow in shining breastplate steps out from behind a pillar. Glaring and waving his serrated scimitar, his shield at the ready, he snarls, “Get gone from here, or we’ll use your skins as cloaks! House Dusklorn claims the Necromancer’s Spike!” Deeper in the tunnel, another drow covers you with his ornate longbow.

To prepare for the next step of the investigation, the party went shopping at the Bazaar. The party upgraded equipment and restocked consumables. Suspecting an encounter with a medusa in the future, many purchased protective measures in the way of smoked goggles.
From the Bazaar, the best way to enter the Noble Section appears to be the Noble’s East Gate. An arched opening in the wall reveals towering mansions, the majority decaying and home to opportunistic fungus. Traveling through the gate, the party is able to navigate to the Necromancer’s Spike.
Light glimmers, as if from hundreds of tiny windows, from the curving sides of this towering natural formation – the heart of the city, its highest point, a column of unbelievable size. However, this close to the base the tiny patches of light shimmering on the column are clearly discrete patches of luminescent fungi.
Traveling the circumference of the spike, the party determines that the entry point to be on the west side of the formation, not 100 feet from the edge of the Plagueburst crater. An unlit cavity gapes at the Column’s base, apparently providing an opening into the interior. The thick stone doors that once must have secured the entry lie blasted in a pile of gravel and small boulders all around the entrance.

Website and Blog Updated

I have updated the website by modifying the character levels, adding the PDF files and the new Character Summary document.

The blog has been updated by modifying the marching order, updating links to the character sheets and Character Summary. I also updated the Story Summary, Missions/Goals and Gathered Information pages.

I still am waiting for updated versions of Dargoth and Kirlic based upon things I found when reviewing their sheets. Assuming that everyone has completed their shopping, we are ready to continue.

Marching Order?

Is this the new marching order?

5. Banjo

Thurstan and Mr. Wolfe

Checked the Treasure Math

Per Bruce's comment on The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 26 on 4/21/11, the party already has already sold 4 tridents, 9 javelins, 5 heavy steel shields and 5 spears. Those proceeds plus 405 GP and 28 PP yielded each party member 129 GP and 8 CP at that time.

Based upon my records, it looks like Clint took the +1 Elven Chain found on Rikaryon's Isle and put his +1 Studded Leather in the kitty. I expect it will be sold with the rest. (I expect this does not count as a pick?)

The items sold this time plus the money from the extra mushrooms (150 GP), yields each party member 708 GP and 7 SP.

(Did you mean to assign a Scroll of protection from Energy to Dargoth? As a fighter, he cannot use it.)

Personal Shopping - What did you buy and sell?

Please post what you plan to buy and sell in this thread.

I want the chance to veto something if it is unavailable. I also like to know what you guys are up to.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 48

It is assumed that you heal up and stay at the Dripstone Inn for the “night”. You may recover spells and abilities. (This is also where you level up.)

When the “morning” comes, Turok addresses the party over breakfast. “Friends, it saddens me to say but this is where N’Kima and I must leave you. We have been too long away from the open sky. You now seem to be on the correct path and we can leave with good conscious. I will provide a report back in Kingsholm so that they may know of your progress and continued health. Farewell my friends, may our paths meet again.” The Druid and the Ape salute the party and head off toward the earth node.

Deciding that discretion is the better part of valor, the party gathered the treasure and gnomes and left Elessarwa’s torture chamber.

Once out of the tunnel, the party parted ways with the gnomes. They return to the Dripstone Inn. Es Sarch is seated in his stone chair. As you approach he asks, “How fare you on the tasks I set you? Are they complete?”

When the party indicated that they had completed their tasks, Es Sarch clapped his emaciated hands and provided congratulations.

The information broker continued to speak, “You have more than my gratitude for completing the tasks I set you; I also have answers for you. First, I have discovered that Fadheela lairs in the Necromancer’s Spike, as unlikely a haven as I could have imagined. But our fair Fadheela possesses resources that extend beyond Pedestal. She found a way to bypass the zone of decay that surrounds the column’s entry. And now I know that way too.”

“To enter the Necromancer’s Spike, one of you must carry this token. It will save you from the destructive magic protecting the first room within. Take care, however, for the ring suppresses the deathly effects of that chamber for only a minute or so.”

At this point he handed a ring carved of obsidian on which a skull was inscribed.

“Unfortunately, undead decay in the chamber even if they carry the ring, so I have been unable to learn anything else of the Vanguard of Sertous other than that the group’s arrival is recent here in the Great Grotto. I suspect this mysterious faction has found a convenient entry point into the Underdark, somewhere within the Necromancer’s Spike. Fadheela, as an associate of the Assissin’s Guild of Pedestal, is a perfect agent.”

“House Dusklorn has claimed the Spike. You’ll face soldiers at its entryway but not within. Unlike you and, ostensibly, this Fadhella, they have no way to get past the magic that protects the first room.”

“If you gain entry and survive, I hope you return and tell me all you learn. I can make it worth your while.”

True to his word, Es Sarch paid the party 150 GP for the extra mushrooms delivered from Rikaryon’s Isle.

Bookkeeping

I have added the treasure to the Character Summary. Please divide it between the party. You may sell anything that you do not want to keep in Pedestal.

It is also time to level up to 6th. Please send me you updated Hero Lab .por and .pdf files once you have leveled up. We can continue playing for a few turns while you level your guys but I will need them before the next combat starts.

This is also the likely place where Turok and N'Kima part ways with the party.

Kirlic attacked Muvaysil with his longbow. The shot proved too difficult with all of his friends in the way and the arrow missed wide. Dargoth Power Attacked Muvaysil with his bastard sword. The blow landed dealing 13 damage despite the fighter’s weakened state. N’Kima lashed out at the spider in front of him hitting with both fists and his bite. The attack sequence dealt 33 damage and killed the summoned spider.

Muvaysil used a wand to Magic Missiles to deal 7 damage to Dargoth while the spider behind him missed the fighter with its bite. Elessarwa Channeled Negative Energy. The whole party was affected. Thurstan, Banjo, Clint, Dargoth, Turok and N’Kima were able to partially resist the effect and only suffered 5 damage. Mr. Wolfe and Kirlic each suffered 10 damage.

Turok stepped into the space formerly occupied by the spider and attacked Elessarwa with his bite and claws. The bite and a claw hit the drow cleric dealing a total of 26 damage. Mr. Wolfe bit at Muvaysil. The attack hit dealing 5 damage and knocked the wizard prone. Thurstan attempted to target Elessarwa with a Lightning Arc but the attacked missed through the congestion of combat in front of him.

Clint maneuvered through his friends and acrobatically jumped and rolled across the altar to gain a flanking position on the drow cleric. Banjo held back awaiting an opportunity to try to disrupt the next spell cast by the drow cleric.

Kirlic maneuvered to his left and shot an arrow at Muvaysil but he missed due to the cover provided by the altar and his companions. Dargoth attacked Muvaysil again with his bastard sword. The fighter landed a solid blow dealing 11 damage. After the blow landed the amulet around the wizard’s neck shattered. N’Kima attacked Elessarwa with his bite and slam attacks but the ape missed with all three attacks.

Muvaysil attempted to cast Flaming Sphere on the defensive but was unsuccessful and lost the spell. Elessarwa completed the spell she started previously and summoned 2 fiendish giant spiders. The first appeared behind and attacked Dargoth with its bite. The monster struck true with its Smite Good attack dealing 9 damage but the fighter resisted the creature’s poison. The second appeared in front of Elessarwa and attacked N’Kima with its bite. The spider missed the ape. Elessarwa cast a spell while casting defensively. The Bane spell affected N’Kima, Kirlic and Mr.Wolfe.

Turok charged the fiendish spider in front of the drow cleric. The power attack bite hit dealing 15 damage. Mr. Wolfe attacked Muvaysil with his bite but the attack missed. Thurstan maneuvered to the top of the room and cast Murderous Command at Muvaysil. The spell did not penetrate the drow’s spell resistance. Clint stepped forward, drew his bow and shot and arrow Elessarwa. The surprise attack missed the mark and the rogue became visible once more. Banjo stepped forward and cast Magic Missile at Elessarwa. The spell penetrated her spell resistance and dealt 9 damage.

The fighter landed a solid blow dealing 21 damage yet the wizard did not appear that much worse for wear after the blow. N’Kima moved forward and attacked Elessarwa with a slam attack. Kirlic, Dargoth and N’Kima all moved swiftly into the room but none were able to engage the drow.

Muvaysil, the drow wizard, cast a Web spell catching Dargoth, N’Kima, Clint and Thurstan in the area. Only Thurstan failed his save and was grappled by the sticky strands. Clint attempted to push further into the room but was not able to negotiate the web’s sticky strands without getting stuck. The rouge too became grappled. Elessarwa, the drow matron, cast a Silence spell targeting the passage and the lower portion of the torture chamber.

Turok and Mr. Wolfe both attempted to navigate the webs and both were successful. Thurstan broke free of the web and moved deeper into the room trying to exit the web and the silence field. The cleric was not quite able to reach his goal. Banjo, frustrated and raging silently, unable to see his targets or cast spells because of the silence attempted to navigate the web. The sorcerer failed and became grappled by the sticky strands.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 42

Dim light reveals iron maidens, racks, and other intricate contraptions in alcoves and spaced throuought the room. The northeast alcove is closed off with bars, and two forlorn gray-skinned gnomes stare out from behind them. Near the northern wall stands a stone altar adorned with intricate carvings of a spider that has the head of a female elf. Atop the altar is another gray gnome who whimpers as she struggles feebly against the manacles holding her.

Glaring at you from behind the altar are two drow. One is a striking female with chin-length silver hair and glittering chain armor, and the other is a slight, bald male clothed in loose black pants. Both have shiny daggers.

Upon reaching the door, the party continued to take precautions. Kirlic and Dargoth both drank antitoxin. Thurstan and Mr. Wolfe applied the Ash Doom antidote. Banjo cast Mage Armor on himself and Invisibility on Clint. The rogue moved to the door and examined it for traps. Thurstan tried to assist but their combined efforts did not reveal anything. While listening at the door, Clint was able to hear the faint sounds of whimpering from the other side.

Trying the door, the rogue found it to be locked. Upon touching the door, caused a ringing to occur. All members of the party clearly heard the sound. With help from Thurstan and several attempts, Clint was able to pick the lock and open the door.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 40

As Numa, the prophet, walked away the party heard more of his raving.

“It is the city that heralds the end! A city primeval regurgitated by the earth! Vast creatures of the deeps wing ‘bout it, and tentacles slither within.”

“Who lives in the city? Sinful, soft carapaces surround minds that churn with philosophies hostile to all other creatures. Roused from the drowned depths, the fabled city is fable no more!”

“I wish the bugs in my hair would comb it!”

Clint’s search revealed a secret trap door. It was not trapped or locked. Once opened, it revealed a 5-foot diameter shaft descending to a sloped wet passage 30 feet below.

A welcome relief from the odor of the tannery above, this place smells of damp earth and stone. It is a passage that slopes slightly upward to the north and downward to the south.Ages of dripping water have birthed stalagmites and stalactites that line the tunnel like teeth, and tiny rivulets of water burble down the passage, off into the darkness.

The passage is 10 feet wide. Following the rising passage, per the instructions provided by Es Sarch, eventually lead to a door in the wall before the passage began to slope downward again.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 40

The faint odor of urine and feces blends to create a stomach-churning aroma around this run-down, single-story structure of limestone and granite. Gaining entry should be easy through the yawning doorway.

The party notices upon entering the building, a stronger stink fills this wide chamber. Yellow-green, luminescence clings to every surface, outlining dozens of wide clay vats that cover large portions of the floor. Dilapidated tables along the walls are stained with the outlines of stretched hides, some humanoid in shape. On the southern wall is a glowing green stain in the shape of a three-fingered hand. Sitting beneath the stain, its back supported by the wall, is a humanoid figure whose identity is lost in filthy rags.

Travel across the Sullen Sea is uneventful. You return to the docks but see no signs of the dwarves when you arrive.

Leaving the boat behind, you return to the Dripstone Inn. Es Sarch is seated in his stone chair. As you approach he asks, “How fare you on the tasks I set you? Are they complete?”

When you answer that you still have one task to complete, he encourages you to complete it and return when you are done. He will take the mushrooms that you harvested and offered to pay you for the extras when you return from the remaining task.

You are able to spend the night and recover your spells. The Domination affecting Dargoth and Thurstan is broken as “morning” arrives.

Coming soon ... 6th Level

Start thinking about what you want to do for your next level. After the next major encounter (which is right around the corner) you will level to 6th. I would like you to be prepared.

We also need to make a decision about Turok and N'Kima. Does the group want the characters  to continue without Hans or should they go their own way? I would like to have that sorted out when leveling happens.

A drow corpse was also found. It was wearing magic chainmail made from fine silver links painted black. Thurstan and Banjo identified the armor as +1 Elven Chain.

After a minute, the dead fungus return to be visible. They look like this:

Turok, moved around to find a place to attack the other monster. Kirlic stepped to the new monster and attempted to strike with a two-handed blow from his curved blade. The blow landed dealing 14 damage. N’Kima expanded his stance, no longer being forced to squeeze. The ape attacked with his bite and claws but missed with all attacks. Banjo moved closer to the action and cast a Touch of Fatigue spell. With no immediate target, the sorcerer held the spell charge.

From the ground, the monster attacked Mr. Wolfe with its bite dealing 10 damage.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 31

Mr. Wolfe sniffed around for the enemy and moved into the clearing. He found a target but not before the unseen monster took a bite out of the wolf dealing 10 damage. The wolf coughed on the spore in the clearing, successfully making its Fort Save, taking an additional point of damage before snapping at the monster. The wolf’s bite sunk into a flesh-like substance dealing 3 damage to the monster.

Clint attacked the monster with Merthύvial and his short sword. The magic blade scored a powerful blow dealing 10 damage but the short sword failed to find its mark. The rogue tumbled back to open a space for Dargoth. The fighter stepped forward and attacked the unseen foe with his bastard sword. The effort was wasted as the blow failed to land. Thustan brandished is rapier in the spot where he believed the foe to be. The magic blade struck true dealing 11 damage. Based upon the lack of blood and the feel of the strike the cleric shouted, “I believe that this creature is a Phantom Fungus. It is not much more than a carvinerous walking plant that also happens to be constantly invisible until killed.”

Turkok, in bear form, sniffed around and moved forward to find the enemy. The druid agreed with the assessment of the cleric but could not vocalize it in a form other than a growl. Upon entering the clearing, the druid started choking on the higher concentration of spores. He successfully made his Fort Save but still took a point of damage. Finding his target, the druid attempted to take a bite of the fungus but missed the target. Kirlic moved forward thought the over-grown terrain to make it to the start of the clearing. The elf too noticed the higher spore levels. He too successfully made his Fort Save and took a point of damage.

N’Kima squeezed through the forest of mushrooms to reach the clearing. The ape sniffed for its foe and discovered that there were more than one. The ape detected a fungus monster to it left and its right. The new monster took a bite out of the druid’s companion dealing 13 damage. The spores also partially affected the ape as he made his Fort Save and took an additional point of damage. Banjo moved closer and cast a Detect Magic spell. The spell did not reveal any additional sources of magic.

The newly discovered fungus attacked N’Kima again biting the ape for 17 additional damage. The original fungus turned its attention to Thurstan but missed the cleric with its snapping bite.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 30

Banjo cast Protection from Evil from a scroll on Thurstan. The cleric came to his senses, if briefly, and realized that he has been under a mind control effect. Banjo tried the same process on Dargoth but the Aboleth’s grip on the fighter’s mind stayed intact. Both recipients still received the other benefits of the spells.

Thurstan cast Detect Magic and looked into the clearing. No magic was detected. Next he cast Detect Poison. The spell revealed that air in front the cleric detected as poisonous. The air is filled with digestive spores. Thurstan moved closer to the clearing and cast the spell again. The air of the clearing is also poisonous with a higher concentration of digestive spores.

Kirlic applied a dose of the Ash Doom antidote as a preparation. Turok and N’Kima stood ready, wary of danger.

Clint carefully moved forward, inspecting the ground as he went. Dargoth shadowed the rogue, standing behind him. Clint did not detect anything in front of him. The rogue stepped forward. He did not detect anything further ahead of him and stepped forward again. He searched again and went to step forward again but ran into something unseen. “What!?!”

The collision was quickly followed by an unseen bite. The chomp dealt 16 damage to Clint.

Game on

We are back.

I will do my best to update frequently but I will not commit to a hard schedule at this time. My work schedule is still pretty busy still and I have a few vacations coming up.

I have not had any word from Hans in quite some time. I am thinking that it might be getting to be time to retire Turok and N'Kima but I wanted thoughts from the rest of the group.

Lastly, it has been brought up in the past that this format would be better served by playing shorter material like Pathfinder Society scenarios. I do not have plans to stop this adventure but was wondering what folks thought about that idea? It is a viable option for PFS play and can potentailly take a character out of your play rotation for some time.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 30

As you approach the island in your boat, details of your destination come into focus.

Sprouting up through a layer of turgid black ooze near the beach are small, yellow protrusions as wide and thick as human fingers. Luminescent green mushrooms with blue caps crowd the island, probably knee-high to a human near the water’s edge but slowly increasing in stature inland. They reach heights of 40 feet or more at the isle’s crowded center. A blue haze lights the air around them.

Making landfall, more details become apparent.

The isle’s narrow beach is composed of a finely intertwined mesh of fibers from which the fingerlike protrusions grow. The ground is spongy but firm. A smell like yeast and citrus commingled, bracing in intensity, issues from the ground. Thin at the island’s boundary but thicker beneath the luminescent mushrooms, a blue glow suffuses the air and stings the throat.

Heeding the words of Es Sarch, you press forward toward the island’s center in search of the black mushrooms with tiny red spots shaped like hands.

The trunks of the green mushrooms grow in thick clumps, but the spaces between clumps are wide enough to squeeze through. After a few minutes, the island’s mushroom trees give way to a wide space that is roughly circular. Within the clearing, the blue haze hangs particularly thickly. Broad, tall stems covered with short, still bristles share the center of the clearing with tiny black mushrooms that sport spots in the shape of little hands. The undergrowth rustles in some unfelt wind.

What do you do?
