The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 78


With a prolonged cracking and a sinister series of clicks, the monstrous bone statue atop the altar suddenly rises, standing on played legs. Mandibles formed of huge fangs click together as the horror lurches to life.
Accompanied by a terrible scuttling, shiny black spider that have fiery eyes begin to pour from between seams in the bone spider’s construction. They arrange themselves into a mass of legs and fangs, and they churn toward you.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 77

Sensing impending danger, Thurstan channeled positive energy and healed himself, Mr. Wolfe and Clint to full and removed 12 damage from Dargoth.

At the suggestion of burning the web from Dargoth, Banjo lit a torch and handed it to the fighter. Kirlic moved forward and cast Resist Energy: Fire on the fighter. Clint took a step backward and signaled the warrior to light the webs.

As the webs in front of Dargoth ignite, the statue stirs.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 76


The party opened all three doors and slowly entered the room. Banjo and Thurstan cast Detect Magic and examined the room carefully. The webs radiated a faint aura of conjuration. The altar/statue base radiated a moderate aura of conjuration. Clint examined what was first thought to be a pedestal and later a well. It turned out to be a font containing a liquid. The rogue was careful not to disturb the webs as he examined the area. The cleric and the sorcerer detected a moderate aura of transmutation magic from the font.

Kirlic and Dargoth stayed close to their party members remaining alert for potential dangers.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 75


After exploring every other know area of the first level, the party decided to finish exploring the room with the spider statue. Two members of the group positioned themselves at each door before opening the doors again.

The large chamber curves outward on the south end. Within that curve is a gradual stair that leads to a large altar of black stone. The statue of a spider the size of a big bear, seemingly pieced together from bones and fangs, stands astride the altar. From the altar, a gossamer carpet of webs stretches down the stairs and 15 feet into the room, enshrouding a pedestal in the room’s center.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 74

A search of the room failed to provide anything else of interest besides the cloak. The contents of the room were not disturbed by the image that played out before the party’s eyes. The only thing of value discovered was the cloak.

Examination of the cloak revealed it to be a drow version of a Cloak of Elvenkind. The lining of the cloak has many pockets all filled with stale, moldering spell components. One pocket contained a rolled parchment with six words written in Abyssal upon it. No one in the party can speak the language but Clint was able to make out the words. The text was a set of words rather than a sentence. They were “avail”, “bewilder”, “conquer”, “dismay”, “entreat” and “forget”.

The remaining three doors in the hallway all lead to similarly appointed rooms. Cobwebbed shelves, nooks and pedestals line the walls, boasting dusty relics of a life spent in the study of magic and death. Nothing magical or valuable was discovered.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 73

Not liking the look of the previous room, Clint headed back through the dining room and back to the initial hallway. The rouge examined the door immediately opposite. It was not locked or trapped. The elf opened the door to investigate further.

Cobwebbed niches and pedestals display dusty skulls and bones of humanoid creatures. Suddenly, the doorway makes a sound as if the door is opening, and the translucent shade of a gaunt drow male shambles in, clicking his black staff against the floor. As you watch, he removes his cloak and hangs it on the wall near the door, then abruptly cocks his head and looks upward, mouthing words silently and looking angry. He rushes out of the room, disappearing near the doorway. You see a cloak still hangs near the door.

After checking the door at the end of the hallway and deeming it safe, Clint opened the portal and looked inside.

It is cold here, causing your breath to steam. Shelves along all the walls hold limbless bodies – turned blue-white but preserved by the cold – with their heads still attached.

The room radiates a faint aura of evocation magic.

Nothing of value was discovered while searching the room. Examination of the doors reveled that they could be locked from the inside.

Clint examined the door to the south. It was not locked and he did not detect any traps. The rogue opened the door to the hallway. From the ne vantage, it became clear that there was an additional door at the end of the hallway to the west.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 70

Examination of the room and its contents did not reveal much. The candelabrum was determined to be the equivalent of an Everburning torch. The place settings were determined to be moderately valuable, 12 gp for the whole table setting.

Clint examined the door to the west and determined that it was neither locked nor trapped. The rouge opened the door to investigate further.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 70

Soft illumination lights this chamber from a candelabrum full of black candles sitting in the center of a huge stone table. Ten Ironwork chairs, the most elaborate of which is at the head of the table to the north, surround the slab. All places are set. Dust and cobwebs cover the whole scene.

The place settings consist of fine dishes, black silk napkins and ornate ironwork utensils.

Clint stepped aside to allow Thurstan to scan the room for magic. The cleric detected three magic auras concentrated on the well (transmutation), the webs (conjuration) and the altar (conjuration),

While this was happening, Kirlic cast Resist Energy:Acid on himself.

After discussing the situation with Thurstan, Clint closed the door and stepped to his right to examine the double doors. The doors did not appear locked or trapped. Listening at the doors revealed nothing.

Clint carefully opened the doors to see what lay beyond.

After making sure it was safe, Clint opened the door he had been examining.
