Winding down for the year

The current turn will likely be the last one posted before Christmas. I may be able to post another turn the week after Christmas but I am not commiting to anything.

We are on track to finish this adventure in the beginning of January. I expect that we will be able to start the new adventure by late January/early February.

If I do not see you, have a happy and safe holiday season.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 132

A tight stairway descends to a landing below. Between sharp ringing reports that must be a metal tool against stone you hear shouting in a guttural language. (In goblin, “Faster, you idiot! Faster!”)
The narrow stairs give way to a wide room lit by faint white light.

Four statues stand in the wide area where the room opens up, each apparently ensorcelled to add a lifelike aspect to it. One represents a tall male human who has a salt-and-pepper beard, plate armor, and a symbol of Iomedae emblazoned on his shield. His brown eyes flash and his black hair blows in an illusionary wind. Another shows a female elf dresses in armor made from overlapping metal leaves. Her tall bow is made of ivory, and the green of her cloak seems to blend into the background of the room. She crouches in a hunter’s stance, peering off in the distance at an unseen target. The red-haired woman from the paintings you have seen is depicted in the third statue. Her hair, kept in check by a silver circlet set with a gleaming diamond, falls in waves down her back, over her white and gold robes. In one hand, she holds a staff tipped with a dragon’s head. Her other hand stretched out to the statue across the room – a kingly figure. The gold crown on his head nearly blends into his blond, flowing hair. The man’s blue eyes shimmer in the dim light as he stares across the room at the red-haired woman. He holds a black longsword point down in one hand. The man’s other hand is held out, palm upward, toward the statue of the woman.

Beyond the statues , sarcophagi along the southern wall have been wrenched open, their lids cast to one side. From where you stand, you cannot see the eastern part of the room, but you can tell the shouting and ringing come from there.

Clint crept forward to get a complete view of the room.

Two more thoughtlessly opened sarcophagi occupy the eastern portion of the room. Here also, swinging a pick at the floor is a male hobgoblin clad in half-plate, his black hair shorn close to his scalp. Nearby stands a slight but imposing man in rich violet robes, replilian scales on his forehead and bald pate, as well as his bright yellow eyes, marking him as not quite human. He leans wearily on and ornate spear.

Spying Clint, he sputters “Fools! You’ll ruin everything!”

Thurstan cast Cure Light Wounds on Dargoth healing 11 damage from the fighter. Dargoth also drank Cure Moderate Wounds potions handed to him by Clint and Banjo. The magic brews healed the fighter an additional 11 and 17 damage restoring him just short of perfect health.

Thurstan donned the mitral breastplate while Dargoth handed his magic flail to Kirlic and equipped the Betrayer’s bastard sword. Clint armed himself with the Betrayer’s short sword.

Once everyone was situated, the party descended the stairs with Clint taking the lead and scouting ahead.

Added character sheets

I have added links to the .pdf files for the characters I have received so far. They are located under the marching order under the PBB References section.

Bookkeeping

I was looking over the treasure list. There is a Mithral breastplate that was found in the Spider's lair. Thurstan should be wearing it rather than the Masterwork breast plate he is wearing. It will not make his AC better but I believe it will increase his movement to 30 as it counts as light armor. It also weights 15 lbs less.

I need to know who is keeping/carrying the two new magic swords.

If everyone can send me a current copy of your Hero Labs character sheets (both .por and .pdf) I will find a way to post the sheets so that they can be accessed from the blog. I think I will do it similar to how the Character Summary and Map Explored to Date files are presented. I might make the marching order links to the sheets that way no new real estate get taken up.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 131

A search of the room reveals a magic bastard sword and a magic short sword on the body of the Betrayer. The two coffers contain a total of 500 GP, 10 PP and a gold and diamond necklace worth 400 GP.

While searching, Clint hears shouting and clanging behind the interior western wall near the throne. Guided by the sound he finds a secret door. It was not locked and did not appear to be trapped. Opening the door, Clint discovered stairs leading down.

The Skeletal Warrior in the southeast corner attacked Kirlic with its full complement. The monster struck a critical hit with its longsword dealing 27 damage. Both hooves hit the ranger for an additional 14 damage. The monster’s bite missed. The mounted undead maneuvered forward. In response Kirlic bravely stepped in front of the monster to box it in and swung his curved blade. The elf hit but did not do full damage dealing only 7 damage.

Next the Betrayer charged Banjo and Power Attacked with his bastard sword. The blow landed dealing 14 damage to the sorcerer. At the same time the wolf felt a buzzing in its head but the faithful companion shook off the mysterious effect. The second Skeletal Warrior rode into the eastern portion of the room with its lance at the ready.

Thurstan expertly poked the first Skeletal Warrior with his magic rapier. The cleric hit but did not do full damage inflicting 14 damage with a critical shot. The wolf moved next to its master and attacked the same target. The animal’s bite scored a hit dealing 3 damage but failed to trip the four-legged monster. Leera moved to Kirlic and cast a Cure Light Wounds on the defensive. The spell healed 6 damage from the wounded ranger.

Dargoth stepped to defend Banjo and Power Attacked the Betrayer with his magic flail. The blow was spectacular. It would have crippled a normal man but the monster shrugged off the worst of it taking only 11 damage. Clint stepped back and fired his longbow at the monster’s head. The shot should have taken an eye but somehow glanced off its crown instead. The arrow dealt 4 damage. Banjo too backed away and cast a Magic Missile at the Betrayer. The spell dealt 9 damage, enraging the monster further.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 127

Leaping to his feet, the man on the throne draws his blades and descends from the dais. As he does, the bejeweled throne fades into a plain stone seat. The man's hair withdraws under the crown, and his skin grays and runs, revealing bone and muscle beneath. His armor sags and corrodes, seemingly grafting to his distended flesh along with the crown, which has lost all luster. Lidless, his eyes burn with madness.

"How dare you come here?" he howls. "Now you shall share my pain. Knights, to arms!"

The statue of the mounted figure in the corner changes to reveal a lance-bearing skeletal warrior atop a skeletal horse. A clatter from the passage to the west suggests more trouble.

Clint confidently stepped into the room followed by the rest of the party. "Greetings, your majesty... we come here today on the trail of some villains, and wondered if you might know where they may be?"

The man on the throne responded "They might be anywhere. How is one to tell? I can imagine many places they might be but they are not here. Do you think it is likely they would have escaped my notice?"

Banjo, standing next to Clint asked "I am Bonjerus Valerae, of the Valerae wizards of Cheliax. What is your name, good sir?"

A look of anger and resentment came over the face of the man on the throne. It looked as if he had tried to say something but stoped short. After a short pause to collect himself he said, "You are not worthy to hear it spoken!"

Kirlic, standing on the other side of Clint, spoke next. "Kirlic Valenwood, ambassador from the Elven Kingdom to the Dwarves. Perhaps we did not have the right to ask your name, as you did not offer it to us. However, on our way to you, a story with great conflict was shown to us. Can you tell us why these walls tell such a sad tale to those who ... whaa!?!"

As Kirlic was speaking, Banjo shouted out and cast a Scorching Ray at the man upon the throne. The spell hit its mark dealing 21 damage in a fiery bolt. Shock and surprise came from the sorcerer’s fellows. Rage and wrath came from the target.

Looking over Clint's shoulder, Banjo cast Detect Magic and examined the western room. The same aura of abjuration reported by Thurstan was detected. Thurstan announced that he believes the aura to be related to the polished and clean state of the room.

Clint completed his descent of the stairs and moved across the landing to the eastern curtain. The rouge carefully checked for traps but found none. Kirlic moved behind Clint with his bow ready. Appearing relatively safe, Clint looked behind the second curtain.

This large room has a glossy stone floor and marble walls. Patterns on the floor and walls shine in the magical light. To the southeast, you see a statue of a mounted warrior, his horse's front hooves kicking at the air. North of that statue, along the east wall, are two iron coffers. A large dais and jewel-encrusted throne are set against the north wall. Sitting on the throne is a handsome, clean-shaven man who has a powerful build, his raven locks spilling from beneath a golden crown onto the pauldrons of his fine plate armor and violet cloak. Sheathed blades lean to either side of his fine chair. As you look on, he opens his dark eyes and frowns.

"Who would disturb the rest of the king?" he asks in a deep voice.

Banjo examined the picture at the bottom of the stairs. No new details are determined from the floor to ceiling image.

Thurstan cast Detect Magic and scanned the area at the base of the stairs. He determined that the whole area radiates an aura of abjuration magic.

Clint looked behind the curtain to the west.

The patterned floor and marble walls gleam in the magical light. They appear polished and and unmarked by age. To the northwest you see the statue of a mounted warrior, his sword held high in the air. A narrow passage continues eastward along the north wall.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - Turn Results 123

Thurstan cast two Cure Light Wounds spells on Kirlic healing 20 of the ranger's damage.
Clint descended the stairs and entered the room from which the undead had emerged. The rogue was able to find rubies laying on the floor in the remains of the two sarcophagi lids. He was also able to pry out the ruby eyes of the remaining sarcophagi. Clint presented 7 gems worth 100 GP each to the party.

Thurstan and Banjo examined the armor from the Huecuva. By putting their heads together, they identified the armor as +1 Fullplate. They then scanned the room and did not find anything additional.

The party investigated the northeast room next. Leera and Dargoth remained outside. Clint, Kirlic and Thurstan's wolf caught a glimpse of their reflections in the magic mirror. All were rewarded with a visions of their proudest moment. All were inspired by the experience and felt a wave of well being wash over them.

A search of the room yielded an additional 8 rubies worth 100 GP each. These gems needed to be pried from the lids of the sarcophagi.

Once the searching was completed the party moved forward.

Descending the stairs leads to another large chamber. Before you can clearly make out its features, again this room fills with a magical image.

Snow covers the hill, but bloodstains clash with the mud and frost. The blond king has fallen to one knee, his left arm hanging useless at his side. Bestial humanoids surround him as he caresses the cheek of the red-haired woman lying mortally wounded before him. Behind the golden-haired king stands the raven-haired knight, his silver armor stained with blood and his eyes wild with triumph, wrath and greed. He holds the king’s crown aloft with one hand as his curved blade slices down at the king in the other. As the image faded, the dim light reveals a plain stone door to the east.

Nothing of further interest is found within this chamber. Exiting the room through the east door leads into a ten foot wide corridor heading east.

Soft light illuminates this corridor from no single point. You see more intricate design work on the north and south walls, but no dust, no webs, and no signs of age or weathering. The passage turns north ahead leading to stairs.

The stairs that descend here are gradual and smooth, and the ceiling above stays at the same height as the corridor, despite the descent. Purple curtains that glitter with gold tracery cover a tall opening to the west of the stairway’s base. The passage also continues to the east on the other side, ending in a similar curtain. On the wall facing the base of the stairs is a huge painting that depicts a tall, dark-haired man sitting on an opulent throne. He wears a golden crown and frowns darkly.

Thinking ahead and gearing up

We are getting close to the end of this adventure and I am thinking ahead and planning for the next one. I have read the next adventure and I believe that I am ready to start shortly after we wrap up this one. Based on our current pace and taking the holidays into account, I would expect that we will have this adventure wrapped up in early to middle January.

The next adventure will take you from 5th level through 7th. Please be thinking ahead as to what you plan to do with your character when you level. The materials from the Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide can now be used.

I have invited Hans Nelson to play. He found us on the web and asked if he could join. I told him that he could jump in when the next adventure started. I expect that he will be joining you on the next adventure. We have not discussed what he plans to play yet but I anticipate getting the detail over the next few weeks.

The next adventure will continue the storyline from the first. It will not be quite as linear. There will be more options on how the characters can progress.

I am looking for player feedback. We have been doing this now for almost 2 years and I am wondering if there are any things that you could see us doing differently that would help the game run more smoothly and be more enjoyable for all of us. I am looking for constructive and realistic suggestions. What I am looking for are things like practices we can implement or new tools or references that can be utilized.

Is the Character Summary enough to help keep track of the characters? Do we need to post full character sheets somewhere?

Is the Map Explored to Date useful? Does anyone look at it?

I stopped updating the Obsidian Portal with turn posts. I also have stopped updating my web site with archived turn maps. It was extra time spent that seemed to yield low rewards. Has anyone missed them?

I do like the Obsidian Wiki. Any suggestions to better utilize it to support this game?

Does the Player Action Response - Turn Post Template work for folks? Some of you are using it and others are not. I was originally looking for a standarized template. If you are not using it, why not? If you are, are there improvements that you can suggest?

Does the dual GM Turn Post and Turn Results Post format work for you?

Are the maps descriptive enough? If not, how would you suggest changing them?

Your input is welcome.

Need more player input

I need a set or rolls for anyone entering and exploring the room to the northeast.

Need player input

I am trying to determine what to post for the next turn.

Instructions received so far:

 - Clint remove rubies form sarcophagi.
 - Banjo and Thurstan examine magic fullplate and try to identify.
 - Thurstan cast two Cure Light Wound on Kirlic.
 - Dargoth rest until no longer sickened.

Is everyone good with proceeding down the stairs once you are done examining the southwest room or do you which to investigate the northeast mirror room further first?

Barrow of the Forgotten King - Turn Results 122

Kirlic attacked the Huecuva with the silver hand axe. The blow landed and dealt 6 damage. Clint targeted the Huecuva with his bow but missed. Dargoth power attacked with his magic flail. The blow powered through the monster’s defenses dealing 6 damage. This was enough to destroy the Huecuva.

Leera moved to Kirlic and cast a Cure Light Wounds healing 4 damage. Banjo held , waiting warily for some further threat. Thurstan cast Cure Light Wounds on Kirlic healing 10 damage. Thurstan’s wolf sat and awaited orders from his master.

The armor from the Huecuva radiates a magic aura. Its longsword is ceremonial rather than a finely crafted weapon of war and does not appear to be magical. A few loose rubies can be seen amongst the rubble in the room to the southwest.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - Turn Results 119

Kirlic attacked the Huecuva with his curved blade. Again the blow bounced off of the monster’s thick armor. Clint held back his distaste for the Huecuva and fired his bow at the Plague Walker. The arrow found its mark dealing 8 damage. Dargoth attacked the Plague Walker with his magic flail. The sickened fighter’s attack landed dealing 8 damage.

The Huecuva targeted Kirlic with a Smite Good slam attack and landed a blow. It dealt 9 damage to the elf. Leera continued her Bardic Performance of Inspire Courage to boost the party. Banjo cast a Disrupt Undead spell at the Huecuva dealing 4 damage.

The Plague Walker slashed at Dargoth with both sets of its claws. Both missed but the monster was not done yet. Heavily damaged and filled with hate, the bloated undead exploded with a combination of magical force and putrid flesh and fluids. The blast dealt 5 damage to Kirlic, Banjo, Thurstan and his wolf. Clint avoided the blast all together by deftly ducking for cover. Dargoth and Leera were not as lucky. Each took 10 damage and became nauseated. Unable to continue singing, Leera’s Inspire Courage ended.

Thurstan cast a Cure Moderate Wounds on Dargoth. The spell healed the fighter for 14. Thurstan’s wolf looked to the cleric for a sign to enter the fight now that an opening was made. Thurstan gave the nod and the animal leaped to attack. The Huecuva slashed the wolf for 8 damage as it positioned behind the monster. The wolf bit the undead, clutching it in the frightful grasp of its teeth but was not able to penetrate it's armor or trip the monster.

Kirlic shouldered his bow and prepared his curved blade and awaited the monsters’ arrival. Clint backed up to make room for Dargoth to take up a position at the door. Dargoth stepped into the opening and stood ready for the monsters.

The Huecuva opened the door and took a swing at Kirlic with its longsword. The monster missed the elf. Upon seeing the monster everyone was filled with a felling of enmity toward the undead. Leera immediately began her Bardic Performance of Inspire Courage to boost the party. Banjo cast a Disrupt Undead spell at the Huecuva dealing 3 damage.

The Plague Walker slashed at Dargoth with both sets of its claws. The first hit but the second missed. The attack dealt 8 damage and sickened the fighter. Dargoth was racked with pain and nausea but held his ground on the front line.

Thurstan maneuvered behind Dargoth and fired a Lightning Arc at the Plague Walker. The targeting was sloppy but the attack still hit the monster due to its bloated mass dealing 5 damage. Not able to find an opening to attack, Thurstan’s wolf waited for an opportunity to strike.

Hearing Clint’s distress, Kirlic moved forward to the door and fired an arrow at the armored undead. The elf could not say why but he felt an extreme dislike for the monster. The shot went wide and missed the target. Clint targeted the other undead with a flaming arrow ignoring the feeling on distain toward the other monster. His shot hit its mark dealing 12 damage to the bloated target. After taking the shot, Clint quickly slammed the door and shouted, “They’re coming!”

With the door closed, the rest of the party anticipated the monsters to the best of their abilities. Dargoth moved forward toward the door while Leera stood her ground waiting for something to happen. Banjo, Thurstan and his wolf also advanced carefully awaiting a surge from the monsters.

Clint considered the value of the rubies but moved out of the way to allow others to examine the area with magic rather than explore the room further.

Banjo and Thurstan scanned the room with Detect magic. Both detect a strong aura of conjuration from the mirror and each caught a glimpse of their reflection in the mirror. Banjo had his mind’s eye fill with images of when he first discovered he had the ability to harness magic. Thurstan was struck with a similar image of the first time he made a connection to Gozreh. Both were inspired by the experience and felt a wave of well being wash over them.

At Dargoth’s request, Leera looked into the room to examine sarcophagi. She did not recognize any of the people depicted on the lids. While examining the sarcophagi she saw herself in the mirror. Immediately the bard’s mind was filled with visions of the slaughter of the innocent family in the mausoleum and her inability and unwillingness to help them escape their fate. The experience left her disquiet and shaken.

Dargoth, Kirlic and the wolf all stood ready for action awaiting direction from the others.

While waiting for the magic users, Clint went to the door to the southwest, opening it to reveal the room beyond.

A musty putrescence pervades the air here. Two warrior statues in this room look stern, even angry, as they brandish their spears southward. You see four standing sarcophagi along the southern wall, two sealed ones flanking to others that are open, their lids lying smashed on the ground before them. Each remaining lid has the graven image of a person on it, each looking like the lid is a prison and each face screaming in pain, wide eyes set with rubies.

The sound of steel clearing its sheath is the first sign that you have danger as a skeletal figure with ornate full plate leaps from the eastern open coffin with a hiss, its eyes burning under its helm. “Blood and vengeance,” it whispers.

With great deliberation, a bloated, rotting figure raises its arms and shambles forward from the other open coffin. A gurgling moan escapes its flabby lips.

Clint closely examined the doors and stairs for signs of traffic. No signs were found to indicate which way the grave robbers had went. Having nothing left but a hunch, Clint carefully opened the door to the northeast.
Four sarcophagi stand within the room, two along the south wall and two to the east. Their lids show the graven images of trapped people on them, one different person for each lid. It is as if each lid is a prison. The imprisoned people are depicted as if they are crying out, their desperate eyes set with rubies. To the north is a huge mirror.

After giving the current room one more pass, Clint climbed the stairs to the spider's lair.

A shroud of webs, thick and strong, lake gray, silken threads, covers a balcony. Someone has cut a hole in the shroud atop the stairs. The dust in the air, but here it is nearly unbearable. You can feel the particles in the air.

Amid the webs to the southeast is a human-shaped bundle and a jumble of discarded equipment. Just beyond the body, a door stands open to the east.

Navigation from the stairs to the room required careful navigation to avoid contact with the web.

Clint reported back what he found and the rest of the party entered the next room.

Examination of the body revealed that it was a hobgoblin wearing a mithral breastplate. The intact equipment among the debris consisted of three throwing axes, a heavy wooded shield, a masterwork battleaxe and a satchel containing a potion, two large diamonds worth 200 GP each, 12 PP and 67 GP. Among the debris was also a skull wearing a phylactery. The potion and phylactery both radiate magic when detected.

Once the party gathered and stored the treasure from the spider's lair, they existed through the door to the east.

Instantly, the square room you have entered illuminates, and you have time to discern a winding stair to the southeast before the walls seem to paint themselves with rich images. A magic painting depicts a spring day on a high, green hill, making it seem as if the sun reaches the room as well as the green slope. You can almost smell the apple blossoms and awakening flowers. People in fine clothes stand around the hill, and it is a tall, raven-haired man dressed in shining plate armor, kneeling before a blond man and a red-haired woman, each wearing golden crowns. The image fades, and the light diminishes but does not go out.

Nothing of further interest was found in the room. The party continued down the stairs to the southeast, entering into another room.

To the northeast and southwest are gleaming stone doors, each engraved with a grinning, fiery skull. In the southeast corner of the room, another winding stair descends. But the room quickly fills with the image of the hill you saw before, now covered in brown grass, flames leaping to the sky off in the distance. The dark-haired man in shining armor wields two curved swords, battling howling goblinoids and baying wolves. Beside him fights the blond king wielding a black longsword. Light sparkles on the blade and the king’s crowned helmet. The red-haired woman holds her ground behind and between the two, her staff held aloft as lightning strikes her foes. Your hair stands on end and your skin tingles, as if electricity were really in the air. As the image fades, you take note again of the doors and the stairs in the magic half-light of the room.

Thurstan cast a Cure Moderate Wounds spell on Dargoth, healing 17 points of the fighter‘s damage and moving him a significant distance away from death’s door. “Kirlic, you will have to wait for healing until the tomb taint wears off.”

Kirlic drank an antitoxin to help quell the poison in his system. After waiting a few moments, the Ranger succeeded in fighting off the poison's effects.

A search of the immediate area did not turn up anything of further interest or value. The only way forward is apparently going up the stairs.

The party returned to the waterfall and advised Sigur that the hated spider and its minions have been vanquished. The fey was happy to hear the news. As promised he rewarded the party for their efforts by supplying a masterwork silvered hand axe. Further he channeled positive energy twice for 17 and 16, healing Clint, Dargoth and Kirlic.

The Tomb Spider attacked Dargoth with its bite. The monster dealt 15 damage. The fighter was able to resist the venom but not the physical assault. Dargoth fell unconscious.

Clint fired an arrow at the spider. The shot hit dealing 3 damage past the monster’s defenses. Kirlic closed to melee range drawing his Elven curved blade as he approached. The ranger struck a blow dealing 6 damage which killed the spider.

Banjo was prepared to cast another Scorching Ray spell by calling on the power of his ring but held back once the spider died waiting to see if any further threat became apparent. Seeing the monster felled, Leera stopped her song to reserve some of her magical assistance in case it was needed later. Thurstan channeled the power of his god to heal Clint and Dargoth by 7. Kirlic was also a target of the healing but rather than heal the ranger, the positive energy caused 7 damage instead! Thurstan’s wolf sat and surveyed the room.

Banjo moved to the north of the room and cast a Magic Missile spell at the spider. The missiles struck dealing 4 damage. Leera started to sing to Inspire Courage. Clint examined the burning remains of the mummy. The husk appeared to be little more than a host for the spider swarm to reside within. Dargoth moved closer to the empty sarcophagi so that he could better examine them. “Does anyone want to examine the stairs?” the fighter asked as he neared the object of his curiosity. Clint cautioned the fighter about doing anything rash. "Easy friend... let’s make sure this is stamped out, and bind our wounds a moment..."

Kirlic switched back to his bow and move to the southeast to better examine the statue. He notices that it depicts a regal figure but one that is shackled hand and foot to his throne.

Banjo and Leera enter the room. The sorcerer continued concentration on his Detect Magic spell but still did not find any telling auras.

Thurstan moved into the room and Channeled Positive Energy, healing Clint 10 damage and his wolf and Dargoth to full. Thurstan’s wolf sat and worked on getting spider carapace out of its teeth.

“Here comes more trouble and it is not my fault!” cried Dargoth as a spider as large as a horse rose up on spindly legs while breaking through the curtain of webs high upon the southern wall. It climbed down the web to the floor next to Kirlic, prepared to attack. As it moved, pieces of gray chitin flaked off.

It stepped forward and swung a mighty blow with its arms. The attack missed the fighter. Dargoth ignored the mummy and continued to smash the swarm of spiders with his flail. The fighter’s efforts paid off as he dealt 13 damage and caused the swarm to disperse.

Kirlic changed weapons to his Elven Curve Blade as he stepped forward and attacked the mummy. The fighter missed the monster. Banjo cast another Scorching Ray at the mummy, hitting for 19 damage. The monster fell to the ground but a new swarm of spiders burst from its corpse.

Leera continued to sing to support the group’s efforts. Thurstan prepared and threw another burning flask of oil into the far corner of the swarm. The missile hit and started to burn causing 3 damage to the mass of spiders. Thurstan’s wolf tentatively bit at the swarm but was not able to mount an effective attack.

Sorry for the dely

Sorry for the delay in posting the last turn. I was sick for a fair chunk of the time and have been very busy at work. I will do my best to post turns in a timely manner assuming the players do the same.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 103

Dust chokes the air in the large, open room. Webs cover the walls, but you can see the gleam of their glasslike surfaces in a few clear patches. The webs also blanket the walls to the south and cover the large statue in the center of the room. You can barely make out its features – it appears to be a man sitting on a throne. Tracks of humanoids are apparent leading from the door deeper into the chamber.

To the northeast are what appear to be four open sarcophagi.

As you enter the room, a swarm of bright red, fist-sized spiders boils out of the webs, rushing toward you. At the same time a human-shaped creature wrapped in webs shambles out from behind the web-shrouded statue. Its skin ripples as if many tiny creatures squirm inside, and through openings in its wrappings, you see flashes of red.

Roll initiative.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - Turn Results 102

The fey man spoke to the group.

“My name is Sigur and this waterfall is my home. I am not the King for which this tomb was built.”

“Listen, evil ones have proceeded you into the tomb, where they will certainly be destroyed. The Betrayer is compelled to slay them, if the foul creature in the next room does not.”

“Who has gone ahead, you say? Well, I took them to be two hobgoblins, a goblin, a halfling and a strange humanoid of unknowable origins. I rushed them to the clutches of the evil spider that lives beyond.”

“It has learned I wish it ill, and it comes and goes in the night. I cannot watch this way in my sleep. My duty to guard these falls is more important than risking my life driving it from the tomb. Still, it is an abomination, and it must be destroyed. Weapons touched by virtue can harm the spider most easily.”

“Other evils lurk beyond. If you kill the spider, I will grant you my silvered battleaxe as reward and aid against what may lay further on.”

Sigur motioned you forward, providing assistance to those having trouble navigating the ledge. You navigated safely to the far door.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 102

“So many visitors this day,” cries the waterfall in a gravelly baritone. But no, the voice belongs to a ruggedly handsome man who steps from the falls clad in a shirt of shimmering mail. His silvery hair is not wet, but it cascades over his shoulders in ringlets. A trim beard rounds out his face, accented by a silver chain around his neck from which hangs a pendant shaped like an acorn. Silvery bladed axes hang from a shining belt. His intense eyes are placid pools of blue and white, and he fixes a grim gaze on you, his jaw set. “Tell me, why came you here?”

Thurstan casts Lesser Restoration on Dargoth. The fighter feels better but is warned to take it easy by the cleric and the sorcerer.

Dargoth and Kirlic advanced to the surface of the ledge as did Clint. The remainder of the party cautiously stepped forward on to or further down the stairs. Clint tied a rope around himself and handed the other end to Dargoth. Once certain that he is reasonably secure, the rogue slowly moved ahead checking the safety of the ledge.

He did not get far before a mysterious voice sounded.

Barrow of the Forgotten King - GM Turn Post 101

The air is filled with mist and spray from the nearby waterfall, but you see a slick staircase leading down to a ledge. A cavernous chamber opens to the east, its floor lost in darkness, and it looks like someone has built a rope line into the stairs as a way to make the descent easier.

After descending the slick and worn steps, you come to a ledge. On one side of the slick shelf is the waterfall, and on the other is a cavernous pit. Spikes have been driven into the ledge on the western side nearest the waterfall, and a rope has been threaded through loops in their tops, forming a banister of sorts.

What do you do next?

Kirlic, the elf ranger is introduced to the party. He was sent by Torvald to assist in the mission to stop the grave robbers. The ranger produced a letter of introduction that appeared to be authentic.

The party set up camp and rested. The treasure was identified and divided. Thurstan healed everyone to full. The night passed uneventfully.

The next morning, Banjo cast Mage Armor on himself. Dargoth succeeded in a save versus his Demon Fever. Clint scouted ahead and found no traps or signs of immediate danger.

Old Dice Roller is back

The old dice roller is back. I moved it back to the top. It seems to conflict with the Wizards roller. If one roller disappears the other should appear. As always, the alternate roller appears to show regardless.
