The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 108


A large set of double doors, banded in silvery metal and bade of black stone, dominates the southern wall of this otherwise empty chamber. Simpler stone doors are set in the eastern and western wall near the northern corners.

Clint carefully searched the hallway and the door at the end. The rogue did not discover anything which alarmed him. The elf gave the all clear sign and motioned the party to move forward. Once everyone was in place, Clint opened the door and entered the room.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 106


The party investigated the room and the mirrors thoroughly. Banjo was able to repoint a mirror to view Elessarwa's sanctum. Nothing has changed since the party left the torture complex.

After 15 minutes of investigation and tinkering the group was ready to move on.

Clint examined the secret door. He did not find any locks or traps nor did he hear anything from the other side. The rogue opened the door to reveal a 25 foot corridor ending in a stone door.

Banjo cast Magic Missile at the shardcaster. The spell penetrated the construct’s spell resistance and dealt 11 damage. Kirlic attacked twice with his curved blade. Both attacks struck home dealing 6 and 16 damage respectively through the monster’s damage reduction.

Thustan channeled positive energy to heal the party. This healed Dargoth to full and removed 11 damage from Kirlic. Mr. Wolfe attacked with his bite but missed. Clint attacked with both of his weapons. The attack from Merthύvial hit but the blow from Organripper missed the shardcaster. The sneak attack dealt 14 damage past the construct’s damage reduction and destroyed it. The remaining tentacles redrew back into the mirrors.

Dargoth looked around for another target but nothing presented itself. The fighter cocked his head and shook it some trying to clear the ringing in his ears.

Once the combat was finished Clint noticed a secret door beyond to the mirror to his right.

Banjo fired two missiles from a Wand of Magic Missiles at the shardcaster. The spell penetrated the construct’s spell resistance and dealt 5 damage. Kirlic stepped to his left and attacked twice with his curved blade. Both attacks struck true dealing 15 and 2 damage respectively through the monster’s damage reduction.

Thustan stepped closer and channeled positive energy to heal the party. This healed Clint to full and removed 8 damage from Dargoth and Kirlic. Mr. Wolfe attacked with his bite which hit and dealt 7 damage. Clint attacked with both of his weapons. The attack from Merthύvial missed but the blow from Organripper landed and found a weakness in the shardcaster. The sneak attack dealt 17 damage past the construct’s damage reduction.

Dargoth stepped forward and power attacked twice with his bastard sword. The first attack hit but the second missed. The blow dealt 13 damage after the damage reduction.

The shardcaster attacked Clint with both of its slam attacks but it missed the rogue with both. The tentacle behind Clint attacked the elf. It missed. The tentacle behind Kirlic attacked the ranger but also missed.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 103


Banjo drew a replacement wand of Magic Missiles and targeted the glass spider. The spell hit the construct dealing 7 damage and destroyed it. Kirlic dropped his bow and drew his sword as he tumbled forward to attack the shardcaster. Though nimble, Kirlic was not nimble enough. The large construct attacked the elf as he approached. The slam attack hit dealing 11 damage. The wounded elf attacked back scoring a strong hit dealing 10 damage past the construct’s damage reduction.

Thurstan also stepped closer to the shardcaster and channeled positive energy to heal the party. The channel healed Thurstan and Clint to full and removed 15 damage from Kirlic. Mr. Wolfe moved acrobatically to flank the monster and attack with his bite. The wolf’s attack missed. Clint tumbled past the tentacle in a clumsy manner but it missed the rogue by a mile. The rogue slashed with Merthύvial and hit with the King’s sword. The attack dealt 9 damage path the creature’s damage reduction. Dargoth stepped forward and made two power attacks with his bastard sword. The first hit but the second missed the mark. The fighter dealt 16 damage through the damage reduction.

The shard caster stepped backward toward the mirrors and attacked Kirlic and Dargoth. Both slams hit dealing 11 and 9 damage respectively. The tentacle next to the rogue slammed Clint and dealt 7 damage. The tentacle next to the ranger missed Kirlic with its slam attack.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 102


Banjo used his wand of Magic Missile again and targeted the glass spider. Unfortunately the spell failed to penetrate the construct’s spell resistance. It was also the last charge on the wand reducing it to nothing more than a fancy stick. Kirlic pulled out a thunderstone and tossed it to the far side of the room. Clint avoided the effect of the thundering boom but Dargoth was deafened. The attack had no impact on the glass spider or shardcaster. Kirlic’s ranged attack provoked and attack from the large construct. The shardcaster used its long reach to swipe at the ranger but the attack of opportunity missed the mark.

The glass spider attempted to bite Clint but it missed the rogue. The construct stepped closer to the mirrors between the rogue and fighter. Thurstan channeled positive energy to healing himself and Clint 14 damage and healing Dargoth and Kirlic to full. Mr. Wolfe stepped forward and attacked the glass spider with its bite but missed.

Clint attacked the spider with both of his weapons. He hit with both but was not able to damage the creature as it currently faced him. The deafened Dargoth attacked the spider twice with his bastard sword. Both blows landed and dealt 18 damage total through the construct’s damage reduction. The second blow was enough to shatter the monster.

The tentacle nearest Clint swiped at the rogue but missed. The other flailed for a target. The shardcaster let loose another volley of shards targeting Thurstan, Kirlic, Dargoth and Clint. The shards missed Thurstan and Dargoth but scored a vicious hit for 17 damage to Kirlic and grazed Clint for 6 damage. A damaged spider emerged from the mirror in front of Thurstan and fired a glass shard at the cleric which missed wide.

Banjo activated one of his wands of Magic Missile and targeted the damaged spider. The wand sent two missiles toward the target but the spell failed to penetrate the construct’s spell resistance. Kirlic fired his bow again, sending three arrows toward the damaged spider. Two arrows struck the target, dealing 8 damage through the damage reduction.

The spider behind Clint attacked the rogue with its bite but missed. Thurstan targeted the wounded spider with a lightning arc. The spell-like effect penetrated the spell resistance and dealt 7 damage. Mr. Wolfe stepped to the corner and attacked the spider in front of it. The wolf’s bite struck home and dealt 9 damage.

Clint targeted the spider behind him with Merthύvial and Organripper. Both blows landed dealing 23 damage past the construct’s damage reduction. Dargoth also power attacked the same spider twice with his bastard sword. The first blow landed and dealt 11 damage through the damage reduction.

The tentacle nearest Clint swiped at the rogue. The attack hit and dealt 9 damage. The other tentacle had no target. The shardcaster stepped closer to the center of the room and filed a glass shard at Thurstan, a glass shard at Kirlic and two at Dargoth. All for ranged attacks struck their intended targets dealing 11 damage to the cleric, 11 damage to the ranger and 13 total damage to the fighter. The remaining spider attacked Clint with its bite but missed the rogue. The spider then stepped back into the glass of the mirror.

After the commotion was heard, Banjo entered the room, assessed the situation and cast Scorching Ray at the Glass Spider closest to Clint. The spell hit its target and powered through the construct’s spell resistance, dealing 16 damage. Clint stepped forward with a grumbling resolve and swung his weapons at the Glass Spider. The blow from Merthύvial scored a devastating strike, dealing 20 damage past the monster’s damage reduction. The strike from Organ Ripper missed. Kirlic stepped to his right and fired three arrows at the same Glass Spider. Two arrows found the mark and dealt a total of 8 damage after the damage reduction.

The other spider fired a glass shard at Thurstan. The projectile struck the cleric, dealing 5 damage. The monster then moved around behind Clint. Thurstan stepped to his right and targeted the spider with a lightning arc. The spell-like ability struck its target with spectacular result. The attack dealt 17 damage through the spell resistance. Mr. Wolfe heeded his master’s call and moved across the room to attack the Glass Spider behind Clint. The wolf snapped at the construct but failed to land its bite. Dargoth entered the room and moved to the aid of Clint.

The Shardcaster gestured and two glass tentacles sprouted from two different mirrors. The first lashed at Clint but missed the rogue. The second did not have a target. The large construct stepped closer to Clint and Dargoth and attacked the rogue with its two sharp fists. The first on missed but the second landed dealing 14 damage. The remaining spider stepped to the side and attacked Clint with its bite but missed.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 99


Thurstan stepped into the room and cast Detect Magic. Each of the mirrors registered a moderate aura of divination magic. Clint entered the room and checked for traps along the perimeter of the room. The elf did not find anything along his path so far. Kirlic entered and stood by the stairs while the rogue did his work. All averted their eyes from looking directly at the mirrors.

Dargoth prepared a blind using his cloak and shield to stop him from looking at the mirrors but waited just out of the room. Mr. Wolfe and Banjo waited patiently for the all clear to be given.

After a minute of investigation, something happens.

The northern mirror in the westernmost alcove grinds as glass extrudes from it. Two mirrors flanking that recess make similar but quieter noises. A hulking figure formed of glass emerges quickly into the western alcove. Glass spiders boil forth from the flanking mirrors. As they rise, their translucent interiors glow with a faint blue luminescence.

Still not liking what he sees, Clint redirects the party again back to the library.

The rogue takes the lead and climbs the stairs. The stairs ascend 50 feet and exit into a large room.

The west wall of this room steps westward, forming an alcove and creating a number of smaller wall surfaces. Embedded in or formed from these smaller walls are large mirrors, six in all.

Not liking the look of the new room either, the party backtracked to the last secret door. Clint examined it for traps but found none. The rogue opened the door to peer beyond.

This immense cavern looks natural, containing stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone columns – some of which have been smashed to rubble. Shallow stone steps sweep down the ledge that descends to the graveyard. Two passages branch off close together in the northern section of the eastern wall and part of the northern wall has been worked smooth. In the middle of the north wall is a stone door. The air still smells of earth here, but the scent of rain mingles with the odor, and the burble of flowing water come from the eastern passage.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 96


The secret door opened into a short corridor heading north to a longer passage heading east. As the passage continued eastward it passed two additional short corridors which ended in secret doors. After the second short passage, the corridor gained an upward slope. At the end of the corridor, a set of steep stairs lead downward. The stairs lead to another short passage which ended in yet another secret door.

Clint examined the door and found no traps and it was not locked. On the other side of the door the rogue discovered a large square room.

This cool and humid room is nothing more than a narrow ledge running around a 20-foot-wide pit that drops into the darkness. Whiffs of salty water waft from below. A door is set into the southern wall of the ledge around the top of the pit.

The party has entered at the bottom of the pit. The floor is comprised of an iron grate. Below the grate only darkness can be seen. The walls of the pit look to scalable but are covered with all manner of questionable material. The lip of the ledge is 20 feet above the floor of the pit.

Not liking what he sees, Clint says, "O.K. so, nothing much to see here, why don't we go back to that library and search that, first?" Beckoning towards the graves, he says "I don't mean to disturb any more of these spirits than I have to right now. We have bigger fish to fry." The rogue carefully steps back and closes the door. He heads back to the noise making trap and disables it.

Searching the two rooms requires several hours to complete.

A search of the study reveals the following:

The desk has ample parchment, ink, charcoal and three blank books. The bookshelf is packed with old journals, esoteric texts, stray papers and even a few entertaining books of drow humor. One journal contains details about the creation of 6 magic mirrors used for scrying and how to attune them to different locations. The handwriting seems to be the same as the note that was found in the cloak on the ground floor of the spire (http://pbbpathfindergame.blogspot.com/2012/03/sinister-spire-turn-results-74.html). It details further the creation of constructs called a shardcaster and glass spiders that were created to guard the mirrors. The journal contains nothing about controlling or avoiding these guardians.

A few more journals contain ravings about vengeance upon the nobles of Pedestal as well as formulations for creating a new magical disease. These formulations do not appear to be complete.

Searching and Detect Magic uncover three magic scrolls on the scroll stand; a divine scroll of create undead, a scroll of haste and a scroll of vampiric touch. A black pair of silk gloves is discovered on the desk. Banjo is able to identify these as Gloves of Dexterity +2.

A secret door is discovered on the north wall behind the dry font.

A search of the library reveals the following:

The bookcases are filled with more educational text similar to the ones discovered in the study. Also amongst the rest is a spellbook belonging to Maroe. The spellbook contains:

Level 0: All spells from Core Rulebook except daze and ghost sound.

Level 1: alarm, cause fear, chill touch, comprehend languages, detect undead, expeditious retreat, identify, mage armor, protection from evil, ray of enfeeblement, unseen servant

Level 2: blindness/deafness, command undead, ghoul touch, false life, scare, see invisibility, spectral hand

Level 3: dispel magic, gentle repose, halt undead, ray of exhaustion, vampiric touch

Level 4: animate dead, bestow curse, fear

A secret door is discovered behind a bookcase on the north wall.

The spiral stairs appear to rise 50 feet into the darkness.

The party closed and barred the open door. Clint carefully examined the door to the south. Finding nothing alarming, the rogue opened the door.

The smell of rich earth suffuses the area, and stretching out before you is a graveyard. Soft but thick soil, dark beneath your feet, makes up the floor. Rows of graves stand in perfect lines, marked not by tombstones but by simple stone stacks. A stone building, its walls covered in etched death symbols, stands in the southeast corner. To the east, a stone ledge overlooks the graveyard, and a carved stairway, its steps broad and shallow, provides access to it. A rounded, natural looking ceiling looms overhead. Flowstone formations jut from the dirt or hang from the ceiling, one forming a natural column.

Clint peeks into the two open doors on the northern wall first. Beyond the nearest door is what appears to be a study.

Near the door is a stone font on a slender stand. Beyond that, on the northern wall, a stone desk and chair are set. The western wall is dominated by carved bookshelves that stretch from floor to ceiling. Part of one shelf is fashioned into a scroll rack.

Beyond the next open door is what appears to be a library.

Bookshelves are carved into the southern wall and two smaller sets are carved into the northern wall. Stone desks also jut from the northern wall, each with a stone chair in front of it. A pair of similar chairs faces each other near the center of the room. A small font on a slender stand occupies the southeastern corner. Two doors pierce the southern wall, and another is set in the eastern wall. Just to the north of that door, and iron spiral staircase rises into the ceiling.

The remaining door on the northern wall is currently closed but will open into the library. The door on the southern wall is closed and does not appear to be locked nor trapped.

While the room is investigated, Thurstan cast Cure Moderate Wounds on Kirlic, healing the elf to full.

Helping Clint Search the room, Kirlic discovers a secret door behind the altar. Dargoth also assist but does not find anything else. Banjo cast Detect Magic but did not discover anything that is still magical within the original room.

Pause for Gen Con

As it appears that everyone has been busy and many of us are going to Gen Con on Wednesday, we will pause the game until after we return next week.


We are progressing with this adventure but there is still a fair amount to play before we finish. We all need to be a bit better about posting turns (myself included) if we want to finish before the end of the year. That is my goal but we will have to see if that is realistic.

Banjo targeted the shadow with a Scorching Ray. The spell hit the undead and dispersed it in a gout of flame.

Looking around with anticipation, the rest of the party breathed a sigh of relief as the room returned to a state of calm and silence.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 91

Banjo attempted to cast a Magic Missile spell on the defensive at the Wearying Worm. The spell launched successfully and bypassed the monster’s Spell Resistance and dealt 12 damage. Kirlic fired two arrows at the Wearying Worm with his magic bow. Both hit the mark dealing 10 damage and 5 damage respectively and killed the living spell. Thurstan ordered his wolf out of the way and once the beast complied, he stepped forward to attack the shadow with his magic rapier. The cleric struck a hit dealing 5 damage. Dargoth attacked the shadow with his bastard sword again. The both attacks hit the undead monster dealing 8 damage and 10 damage each. Clint moved around in front of the pews and attacked the shadow. His longsword hit and dealt 4 damage.

The shadow attacked Dargoth again but missed the fighter.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 90

Dargoth waited for Thurstan to cast his Lesser Restoration spell. Banjo attempted to cast a Magic Missile spell on the defensive but the sorcerer failed in his attempt. Kirlic fired and arrow at the Wearying Worm. The elf scored a hit dealing 8 damage. Thurstan cast Lesser Restoration on the defensive and healed 4 points of STR damage from Dargoth. Dargoth attacked the shadow with his bastard sword. The first attack hit the undead monster dealing 10 damage and the second attack missed wide. Clint attacked the Blinding Blot with his two named weapons. The rogue hit with both dealing 11 damage and 3 damage respectively and killed the monster. Mr. Wolfe continued to cower.

The shadow moved behind Dargoth attacked again. The monster hit the fighter dealing another 3 STR damage. The Wearying Worm attacked Thurstan with its slam attack but missed the cleric.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 89


Dargoth stepped forward and power attacked the Wearying Worm. Because he had to navigate through the pews he was only able to make a single attack. The fighter hit with his magic bastard sword and dealt 16 damage. Banjo cast Magic Missile on the defensive and targeted the Wearying Worm. The spell was successfully cast and hit the target but had no effect because the sorcerer failed to penetrate the creature’s spell resistance.

Kirlic fired two arrows at the Wearing Worm but the ranger missed with both attacks. Thurstan attacked the Wearying Worm with his magic rapier. The weapon hit with what should have been devastating effect but dealt only 11 damage.

Clint remained focused on the Blinding Blot. The rogue attacked and hit with both of his weapons dealing 9 damage and 4 damage respectively. The creature lashed out at Clint but missed with its slam attack. Mr. Wolfe whimpered next to Thurstan and refused to attack the Wearing Worm.

The shadow glided forward and attacked Dargoth with its negative energy touch. The undead’s touch caused the fighter 5 STR damage. The Wearying Worm jabbed at Dargoth but missed with its slam attack.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 88

Dargoth moved forward and engaged the Ghoul Ooze. He power attacked with his bastard sword. The blow landed dealing 22 damage. Clint held his ground waiting to see what the creatures would do.

Banjo climbed the stairs and entered the room. The sorcerer cast Magic Missile at the Ghoul Ooze. The spell succeeded past the monster’s spell resistance dealing 9 damage. Kirlic also finished climbing into the room. The ranger notched a silver arrow and let fly at the Blinding Blot. The arrow struck home dealing 7 damage.

Thurstan stepped forward and cast Dispel Magic upon the Wearying Worm. The living spell did not disappear but Thurstan’s spell seemed to affect the monster in some way.

The Blinding Blot moved toward Clint and attempted to engulf the rogue. The elf was nimble jumped backward. The rogue then attacked the creature with Merthύvial and Organripper. The king’s sword missed but the smaller blade struck true dealing 6 damage. Mr. Wolfe entered the room and maneuvered to the left to stand by Thurstan. The animal did not seem eager to engage any of the strange monsters.

An insubstantial, humanoid-shaped shadow emerged from the dais a started to flit toward the battle. The Wearying Worm moved forward over the pews and attacked Thurstan. The creature lashed out with its head but missed the cleric with its slam attack. The Ghoul Ooze attempted to engulf Dargoth but the fighter managed to land another blow with his bastard sword dealing 21 damage. This destroyed the monster.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 88

The air crackles with power as three amorphous creatures glide into view. A roiling cloud of blurry blackness darts from under the huge table to the east. A rotting stench precedes a red-tinged gray vapor as it slides out of the closest open door in the northern wall. From the other open door along the same wall, a writhing, wormlike form of blackness slithers slowly into view.

Clint sneaked forward carefully. As Dargoth and Thurstan climbed into the room behind him, the elf motioned to the party behind him to wait while he investigated the room more closely.

Clint started to circle to the right around the pews looking for traps and hidden dangers. Thurstan detected a magical aura under the table and shouted a warning as three creatures emerged to challenge the party.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 86

Clint examined the spiral stairs and did not discover anything alarming. The rogue climbed the stairs to discover where they lead. They ascended 40 feet and opened into a large chamber.

You arrive in a short hall that widens into a massive chamber. Closest to the stairs you just ascended are stone pews. On the farthest end of the room is a stone stage with a stone chair and lectern upon it. Just in front of the dais is a huge stone platform or table that is at least 10 feet long and darkly stained. It has shackles attached to it. Three smaller stone desks and chairs are arranged between the dais and the pews. Two stone doors, both open, stand near each other on the northern wall, and a closed door is further to the east on the same wall. A shut stone door is set in the southern wall not far from where you entered.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 86


This small stone chamber mirrors the one you arrived in on this floor of the Spike. An iron spiral staircase leads upward. Two staircases descend from the eastern wall, one attached to the northern wall and the other to the southern. At the top of each stairway is a stone door with a heavy iron bar across it. The space between the two flights forms a passage that ends in the secret door.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 84

Closing the first door and motioning the party to continue waiting, Clint sneaked ahead to the next branch of the passage. The rogue discovered another secret door designed to open into the passage. The door did not appear locked or trapped. Like the last door, Clint opened the new one slightly to see what was on the other side.

A mirror to the northern pit, the southern pit is full of skeletons and bones, some of which rattle and twitch.

Clint motioned the party to stay where they were. The rogue finished examining the secret door. He found no traps so he opened it slightly to peer within.

The stench of death pours through the door when opened. Heaps of bodies and body parts form an obscene landscape on the floor of this enormous pit, some jerking spasmodically and moaning. A lip or catwalk, 20 feet above, hangs over the pit and looks to continue around the perimeter of the pit. The overhang looks to be carved from the surrounding walls without any support from below. The ceiling appears to be 10 feet further above the surface of the catwalk. The room above appears to open to the south as well but details cannot be determined from the current vantage.
