The wide road is choked with carts, booths, and tents, around which swarm sellers hawking their wares. Myriad items are available here, including riding lizards, sweetmeats, buoyant fossilized mushroom fibers, silver, pelts, crystals, vellum and pens, weaponry, and more. The assortment of buyers varies equally, and you see a few stooped giants, dozens of drow, duergar, grimlocks, and even a few stranger creatures. Dancers, magicians, stalactite throwers, fire-eaters, puppeteers, and tattooists peddle their talents to any and all comers beneath the green light of hundreds of hanging lanterns. The hard eyes of armored bodyguards and mercenaries warn would-be robbers.
What do you do next?
You may buy or sell mundane items that are under 3000 GP price. Magic items also under the 3000 GP limit can be purchased but it will take some time to locate. Selling magic items for the normal half price also takes time to find a buyer. There is not anything like a magic shop.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 25
The party agreed to work for Es Sarch in exchange for more information. Before setting out on either of the tasks, they decided to go shopping at the Bazaar.
Along the way, Clint gathered some information regarding the island, the mushrooms and the disease that the mushrooms are supposed to treat.
• The fungus on the island give off digestive spores that eat the flesh of those who come in contact with them. This effect seems to be heightened in anyone that has spent any significant time in Pedestal.
• The concoction that Es Sarch was talking about is used to treat a disease called ash doom. With proper alchemical preparation, the mushrooms are made into a powder that provides immunity to ash doom for a week. If used by someone already inflicted, the powder grants +6 to Fort saves made to resist the disease. Each dose of powder sells for 100 GP in Pedestal.
• The terrible plague that laid Pedestal low originated on Noble’s Bluff, leaving a crater now called the Plagueburst. Average citizens avoid Nobel’s Bluff, because they fear a renewed outbreak of the disease.
• The Plagueburst is still infectious, and it taints those who approach too closely with the ash doom disease. A victim of the illness gradually disintegrates into luminescent green ash, becoming one of the plague lost. The plague lost are ghostly beings that hate the living and exist to spread the ash doom.
• The origin of the Plaguebusrt remains hotly debated. The top contenders among competing explanations are a brief manifestation of an awful god of pestilence, a mundane disease magnified by an alchemical accident, perhaps within the Necromancer’s Spike, or a magical attack on the city by illithids or another enemy.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 24
After the party agreed to his terms, ES Sarch laid out what he had in mind.
"An immense island of fungus glimmers atop the Sullen Sea west of Pedestal, and I have been told that it releases dangerous digestive and luminescent spores into the air around it. These spores create a dim blue light, which you must have seen as you came to Pedestal, but they also slowly destroy fleshy creatures, including my undead agents. Those who live in this so-called Great Grotto are more susceptible to these spores. Sending anyone from Pedestal to the isle to collect what I seek would mean the creature's death. But for you surfacers, the threat should be minimal."
"Growing upon Rikaryon's Isle, as it is called, is a mushroom for which those here in Pedestal pay dearly. Its cap is a sovereign remedy against the plague that tumbled the ruling drow from their alters and thrones. Journey down to the dock west of here on the Sullen Sea, find a seaworthy craft - a few are left -and head out to the isle. The mushrooms I seek are obvious, black with red spots in the shape of tiny hands. You can't miss them, though you might have to venture to the isle's center to find them. Bring me at least ten."
"The disruption following Pedestal's fall lasts even unto this hour, though I must admit the vacuum provided by fleeing drow has been to my advantage. Consider, though, that the reason this city did and does not completely collapse into chaos is due to my efforts. Nearly everyone here appreciates my influence. But gratitude doesn't last, and others seek to displace me."
Es Sarch's voice falls to a whisper. "The Assassins' Guild has decided to seek an alliance with House Dusklorn. If my agents were to disrupt this burgeoning accord, I fear I'd do more to cement the relationship than diffuse it. I ask you to eliminate or drive off Elessarwa Nledoor, matron of the house and psychotic to boot. I have knowledge of a hidden route to her secret torture chamber, where she slinks away from her duties to the Dusklorn to apply her savage arts to hapless victims she takes from Pedestal's alleys. I have arranged matters so Dusklorn will believe her death to be the duplicitous Assassins' Guild. That will be the end of that."
At the end of his speech, Es Sarch produced a piece of folded parchment from his sleeve and handed it to the nearest character. The note reads:
Find the old tannery on Matron Road near the wall that encircles Noble's Bluff. The skin shop's ghastly smell yet lingers in the area. Inside, on the southern wall, find a green stain in the shape of a three-fingered hand. That stain marks the location of a hidden trap door that opens to a passage under the building. Follow the tunnel to its highest point. You'll come to the doorway of the chamber used by Elessarwa for her arts.

Careful examination of the servers and Barkeep indicate that they as some sort of unidentifiable undead. They are pleasant and dutiful and do not act in a hostile or threatening manner. The patrons seem at ease with the staff but they take some getting used to once their origin is determined. After having something to eat and securing a few rooms, the party nervously approached Es Sarch.
The figue's face is lost in the vouminous folds of its bizarre robe. An odor like thyme mixed with dirt intensefies as the figure raises and arm in greeting and speaks in a raspy voice. "Travelers from the sun-poisoned skin of the world, welcome. I am Es Sarch. I deal in information. Thus I know many truths, but not the one that brings you to this fallen city."
The group asked some questions of Es Sarch.
Banjo - Q : Do you know anything about the Vanguard of Sertrous?
A: I do not know of this organization but I will be mindful to investigate it.
Banjo, Thurstan, Dargoth - Q: Do you have any information on the aboleth?
A: Its name is Imaug. It lives within the Sullen Sea and preys upon those who cannot defend themselves. He has a pack of Skum that usually does his dirty work. Those that run afoul of the creature do not usually return to tell the tale.
Clint - Q: What can you tell us about the Assassins’ Guild?
A: The guild takes initial orders through their drop box. The order must include the victim and a location for where the requestor may be contacted. If the target is found acceptable, a representative will contact the requestor and collect half of the attempt fee up front. When a hit is fulfilled, the assassin destroys the victim’s head preventing easy use of magic on the corpse.
Fees have a base cost of 1000 GP plus 300GP per HD of the target. The other half of the fee is collected if the hit is successful. Either way the contract ends once the attempt has been made. Certain powerful people have paid far more than this fee to place themselves on the safe list.
Banjo - Q: Can you supply more sensitive information on Fadheela?
Clint - Q: Have you heard anything about items taken from the Forgotten King’s tomb or the whereabouts of his bones?
A: I have given you information freely, up till now. I do know something of what you speak, but to learn more, I must expend resources. Thus, I propose an alliance. Aid me with a few tasks I’d prefer to be accomplished by those outside Pedestal’s power structure. Upon your completion of thos tasks, I’ll know more of Fadheela. In your debt for your favors to me, I will deliver that information to you. What say you?

After a few minutes of observation of their surroundings, the group entered the Dripstone Inn.
Conversations near the entryway go quiet a many patrons in the common room look you over. Few of the faces seem welcoming, and most that do look hungry or insane. Dusky dwarves, wild-eyed derro, slim drow, and stranger creatures sit of stand in the dozen or so lantern-lit niches scattered about this large, high-ceilinged chamber. A central bar is stuffed with bottles, casks, pipes, vials, cigarillos, and less familiar paraphernalia. Cloaked in white linen, a humanoid figure stands behind the bar. Four servers move about the room, similarly shrouded. A side door apparently opens into a busy kitchen that is alive with the sounds and scents of cooking. From a great stone chair across the common room, a humanoid figure observes, wrapped in and hooded by a crimson robe that has a complex pattern of eyes on it. Whatever this creature is, you sense that litle escapes its notice.
The current patrons of the inn include 5 drow, 7 duergar, 6 derro, 2 grimlocks, 3 kuo-toas, 2 svirfneblin and a dwarf.
Including those working in the kitchen, there appear to be approximately 15 servers. All are dresses in white and appear to be gaunt and almost skeletal. It is difficult to tell one apart from another. The only member of the staff that appears to speak is Barkeep. He speaks only in a husky wisper and only when required. The rest appear to communicate only with waves and gestures. As the group walked in, one gestured to an open table. Shortly after taking seats, a mute server brought menus and waited expectantly to take your orders.

Everything on the menu has a price of 5 SP. Typical food items include mushroom soup, cheese and curds, dried or cooked fish of many varieties, marrow and liver stew, Spicy lamprey soup, cockroaches in gold green sauce, roasted meat of many varieties, and sweet blood jellies. If the kitchen does not have the requested item, a suitable substitute will be supplied instead. Almost any drink can be accommodated as can calls for cigars and pipe leaf. Rooms at the inn go for 5 GP per night.
The results of your investigation so far:
Banjo discovers the following:
- Protection from Evil scrolls, among many other items, might be found at the Bazaar (area P11) near the East Gate (area P14).
- Approaching Barkeep and asking about Es Sarch and Fadheela got the response, “See the man in the red robe.” He pointed to the shadowed rear of the bar indicating the figure on the stone chair.
Clint discovers the following:
- The Assassins’ Guild is an efficient and powerful criminal organization. Many of the city’s residents pay the Assassins’ Guild protection money. They are currently allying with House Dusklorn to seal their bid for power over Pedestal.
- Anyone can take out a contract with the Assassins’ Guild by dropping an order in the drop box on Skull Avenue (area P10). How it works is a mystery because no one has ever been seen emptying the box.
- The drop box is a convenience for the guild since the location of the guild’s headquarters is a closely guarded secret.
- The assassins’ leader is named Fluid.
- Fadheela, a mysterious woman, is the guild’s most infamous enforcer. She lives in the Necromancer’s Spike and she is a medusa.

Any more player responses before I post the next turn? I still have not heard from Matt H and Brad.
The order and tone of encounters in Pedestal will depend upon the character actions. The plot is more a web than a line in this section. This is the free form portion of the adventure. Player input is very important.
As it is very likely that there will be dialog between the characters and NPCs, I will do my best to answer questions in the turn posts rather than posting a new turn. New turns will be posted once you enter a new encounter area.
Based upon the input receive so far I expect that you will be entering the Dripstone Inn and looking for ES Sarch and information about the Aboleth and Fadheela.

The Sinister Spire – Turn Results 21
After collecting and identifying the loot and examining the lay of the city, the party headed into Pedestal in search of the Dripstone Inn.
The quest was a short one. The Street of the Five Hanged was located 3 blocks from the South Gate where the group entered the city. The inn was just to the right.
Lights of every hue stream from the windows of this sprawling three-story building. Conversing voices, snippets of song, and the clatter of crockery spill into the street. Odors of exotic tobaccos, yeasty drink, and barbecued meat suffuse the air. The wall facing the street is a sculpted formation of flowstone, like dozens of drooping hands, apparently built up from water falling from somewhere high above. Here and there, stone faces leer out from the deposits.

The wall facing the street is a sculpted formation of flowstone, like dozens of drooping hands, apparently built up from water falling from somewhere high above. Here and there, stone faces leer out from the deposits.
