This time he was not lucky enough to strike his opponent.

Turok, in bear form, attempted to savage the fungus but missed the with his bite and claws. Kirlic moved forward into the clearing. The invisible monster snapped at the elf dealing 10 damage. The ranger attempted to strike back but his flail missed the mark. N’Kima was forced to continue squeezing to remain the clearing between his master and Kirlic. The ape attacked the monster to the right with his bite and claws. Only the second claw found the mark dealing 9 damage. Not able to target the monster with his spells, Banjo maintained his Detect Magic spell in hopes of having it reveal something useful. The spell did not reveal any additional sources of magic.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 31

Mr. Wolfe sniffed around for the enemy and moved into the clearing. He found a target but not before the unseen monster took a bite out of the wolf dealing 10 damage. The wolf coughed on the spore in the clearing, successfully making its Fort Save, taking an additional point of damage before snapping at the monster. The wolf’s bite sunk into a flesh-like substance dealing 3 damage to the monster.

Clint attacked the monster with Merthύvial and his short sword. The magic blade scored a powerful blow dealing 10 damage but the short sword failed to find its mark. The rogue tumbled back to open a space for Dargoth. The fighter stepped forward and attacked the unseen foe with his bastard sword. The effort was wasted as the blow failed to land. Thustan brandished is rapier in the spot where he believed the foe to be. The magic blade struck true dealing 11 damage. Based upon the lack of blood and the feel of the strike the cleric shouted, “I believe that this creature is a Phantom Fungus. It is not much more than a carvinerous walking plant that also happens to be constantly invisible until killed.”

Turkok, in bear form, sniffed around and moved forward to find the enemy. The druid agreed with the assessment of the cleric but could not vocalize it in a form other than a growl. Upon entering the clearing, the druid started choking on the higher concentration of spores. He successfully made his Fort Save but still took a point of damage. Finding his target, the druid attempted to take a bite of the fungus but missed the target. Kirlic moved forward thought the over-grown terrain to make it to the start of the clearing. The elf too noticed the higher spore levels. He too successfully made his Fort Save and took a point of damage.

N’Kima squeezed through the forest of mushrooms to reach the clearing. The ape sniffed for its foe and discovered that there were more than one. The ape detected a fungus monster to it left and its right. The new monster took a bite out of the druid’s companion dealing 13 damage. The spores also partially affected the ape as he made his Fort Save and took an additional point of damage. Banjo moved closer and cast a Detect Magic spell. The spell did not reveal any additional sources of magic.

The newly discovered fungus attacked N’Kima again biting the ape for 17 additional damage. The original fungus turned its attention to Thurstan but missed the cleric with its snapping bite.

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 30

Banjo cast Protection from Evil from a scroll on Thurstan. The cleric came to his senses, if briefly, and realized that he has been under a mind control effect. Banjo tried the same process on Dargoth but the Aboleth’s grip on the fighter’s mind stayed intact. Both recipients still received the other benefits of the spells.

Thurstan cast Detect Magic and looked into the clearing. No magic was detected. Next he cast Detect Poison. The spell revealed that air in front the cleric detected as poisonous. The air is filled with digestive spores. Thurstan moved closer to the clearing and cast the spell again. The air of the clearing is also poisonous with a higher concentration of digestive spores.

Kirlic applied a dose of the Ash Doom antidote as a preparation. Turok and N’Kima stood ready, wary of danger.

Clint carefully moved forward, inspecting the ground as he went. Dargoth shadowed the rogue, standing behind him. Clint did not detect anything in front of him. The rogue stepped forward. He did not detect anything further ahead of him and stepped forward again. He searched again and went to step forward again but ran into something unseen. “What!?!”

The collision was quickly followed by an unseen bite. The chomp dealt 16 damage to Clint.

Game on

We are back.

I will do my best to update frequently but I will not commit to a hard schedule at this time. My work schedule is still pretty busy still and I have a few vacations coming up.

I have not had any word from Hans in quite some time. I am thinking that it might be getting to be time to retire Turok and N'Kima but I wanted thoughts from the rest of the group.

Lastly, it has been brought up in the past that this format would be better served by playing shorter material like Pathfinder Society scenarios. I do not have plans to stop this adventure but was wondering what folks thought about that idea? It is a viable option for PFS play and can potentailly take a character out of your play rotation for some time.

The Sinister Spire - GM Turn Post 30

As you approach the island in your boat, details of your destination come into focus.

Sprouting up through a layer of turgid black ooze near the beach are small, yellow protrusions as wide and thick as human fingers. Luminescent green mushrooms with blue caps crowd the island, probably knee-high to a human near the water’s edge but slowly increasing in stature inland. They reach heights of 40 feet or more at the isle’s crowded center. A blue haze lights the air around them.

Making landfall, more details become apparent.

The isle’s narrow beach is composed of a finely intertwined mesh of fibers from which the fingerlike protrusions grow. The ground is spongy but firm. A smell like yeast and citrus commingled, bracing in intensity, issues from the ground. Thin at the island’s boundary but thicker beneath the luminescent mushrooms, a blue glow suffuses the air and stings the throat.

Heeding the words of Es Sarch, you press forward toward the island’s center in search of the black mushrooms with tiny red spots shaped like hands.

The trunks of the green mushrooms grow in thick clumps, but the spaces between clumps are wide enough to squeeze through. After a few minutes, the island’s mushroom trees give way to a wide space that is roughly circular. Within the clearing, the blue haze hangs particularly thickly. Broad, tall stems covered with short, still bristles share the center of the clearing with tiny black mushrooms that sport spots in the shape of little hands. The undergrowth rustles in some unfelt wind.

What do you do?

The Sinister Spire - Turn Results 29

“They have paid their fare!” shouts the duergar outside the shack. She pointedly looks at Banjo, “There is no need for bloodshed or bodies floating in the water. Be on your way without further foolishness or I will not be responsible for what happens next.”

With caution on the part of the party and steely stares from the duergar, the party boards and launches the seaworthy vessel and makes way toward Rikaryon’s Isle.
